Auburn Diversity Services Inc. takes pride in supporting the multicultural diversity of our area. Accordingly we actively participate in events that increase the awareness of migrant and refugee issues and overcome the marginalisation of these communities in mainstream society. Some of these include:

REFUGEE WEEK

Refugee week is held each year in October during Austcare Refugee Week. It is a national event that commemorates the struggle and resilience of refugees and the contributions they make to our community in Australia. In both 1999 and 2000 ADSi co-ordinated events to mark the occasion in collaboration with key service providers in the area. Events included a picnic in Auburn Botanical Gardens, seminars on refugee issues and art exhibitions with artwork contributions by refugee artists. In 2000 we also arranged for an art competition for school children which generated an overwhelming response from primary schools in the area with over 100 participants. A special reminder of Refugee Week 2000 was the production of a calendar in association with STARTTS (www.startts.org) and NSW Refugee Health Service inspired by selected children's artworks. This calendar was distributed to various community organisations and participating schools.

AUBURN REFUGEE YOUTH AWARDS

Auburn Refugee Youth Awards is an anually event which celebrates acheivement by Refugee Youth in the fields of Art, Music, Sports, Academics & Leadership. For further information please contact ADSi reception.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

With various organisations, ADSi also organises the celebration of IWD held annually in March. The event is celebrated around the world as an important day to recognise the contribution of women around the world to many achievements throughout history. However we also see it as an opportunity to pinpoint the struggles of many women in underdeveloped nations or in repressed situations not only overseas but also in Australia. In particular we focus on the refugee women and women of Non English Speaking Background (NESB) who have constantly been underrepresented. IWD allows us to raise these issues and to give women in Auburn an opportunity to congratulate themselves for the tremendous contributions they make to the community at large and the family unit.

AUBURN FESTIVAL

ADSi takes part in the annual Auburn Festival with active participation in the steering committee for the event. The festival gives an opportunity for the residential community to scan through an array of information stalls. The community service providers have the chance to meet the general community and listen to what they would like from the services. The festival has many food stalls, dances, and cultural displays and is very reflective of Auburn's cultural community. AUBURN DIVERSITY SERVICES OPEN DAY

This is a day we set aside once a year to invite the community of Auburn LGA to our centre. On the Day we provide information on what the centre has to offer. We also take community opinions on what the centre can offer or change.

LAUNCHING SPECIAL REPORTS

From time to time ADSi also takes part in launching special reports. These reports raise issues of concern to the centre and to the general well-being of refugees and migrants.

INFORMATION SESSIONS

We also provide information sessions on a range of topics to empower the community's migrant, refugee and humanitarian entrants on settlement issues. Throughout the year we hold information sessions for community service providers advising them of the needs as we have identified them, of refugees and migrants in the Auburn LGA. Regular sessions are facilitated at the centre about immigration, housing, employment and health. If you have any queries about the events we hold or are interested in taking part please call us on 02 9649 6955 or email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
